Martha Nyalam Chatim

Martha Nyalam ChatimMartha Nyalam Chatim holds a Bachelor’s degree in Legal sciences (BLS) and an LLB from the University of Mumbai. While undertaking her degree, Martha served in various leadership positions. One of which includes her positon as the secretary for the All India African Students Association. She also went through internship programs with different law firms in Mumbai.    
After completing her studies, Martha started participating in civil society activities under the South Sudan Law Society (SSLS) and eventually co-founded a youth organization called Youth Engagement for Sustainable Societies (YESS). The main purpose of this organization is to empower societies through the empowerment of refugee youth and children living in the Kakuma Refugee Camp. She also forms part of the Exiled Human Rights Defenders, a group of human rights defenders from the Eastern African region. This group was formed in Nairobi with the help of Peace Brigades International (PBI) with the aim of coordinating various human rights activities being carried out by the refugee human rights defenders in Nairobi. Martha is also a steering committee member of the very first initiative on human rights documentation in South Sudan called the Human Rights Documentation Initiative (HDRI) formed in 2016 in Dar es Salaam with the aim of documenting all human rights violations that have occurred since the outbreak of the 2013 civil war.
Martha currently works at YESS as the Executive Director and continues to work closely with South Sudanese civil society organizations on human rights issues.
