From the Director: ALC founder Dr. Funmi Olonisakin appointed to the advisory group of experts for the Review of the UN Peacebuilding Architecture

It is with great pleasure that I write to inform you that Dr. 'Funmi Olonisakin, the founding Director and Board Member of the African Leadership centre, has been nominated by the UN Secretary General as a Member of the Advisory Group of Experts on the review of the UN Peacebuilding Architecture. The announcement, which was made on 22nd January 2015, follows a process of initial nomination by the UN Secretariat, which ended with a Committee of the General Assembly and UN Security Council approving the Terms of Reference for the Review as well as a Panel of seven experts from around the world that included Dr. Olonisakin. The Group is tasked with undertaking country case studies in Burundi, Central Africa Republic, Sierra Leone, South Sudan and Timor-Leste, conducting a policy and institutional review of the Peacebuilding architecture and develop findings and recommendations based on this work.

In the past four years while heading the African Leadership Centre, Dr. Olonisakin steered the work of the Centre in the direction of studying Peacebuilding in Africa. Indeed, there are several ongoing research and policy programmes that address this issue. By nominating her to the Group of Experts, the UN Secretary General has affirmed not just the excellent work that Dr. Olonisakin has conducted in this area but also the potential she holds to contribute extensively to the future work of the Peacebuilding architecture. This provides us at the African Leadership Centre a perfect opportunity to upscale the work we do in this area but also to place it firmly at the heart of the global and continental policy making world.

We are indeed very proud to be associated with Dr. Olonisakin. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, Staff, Fellows and Alumni of the African leadership Centre, I congratulate her on the nomination and promise to put the intellectual resources of the centre and those of partners, including King's College London and University of Nairobi, to support her work on the committee whenever this is needed.

Dr. Godwin Murunga
Director, African Leadership Centre.
